Designing Your Finished Basement – Horner Painting

Whether you’ve just moved into a home with a finished basement or if you’ve just finished redoing your own basement, it’s time to get designing! You may choose to extend the style you have on the main level of the house down below, or you might opt to get creative and do something totally different and unexpected. Regardless of which you choose, we are here to help! Read on to learn about the top ways to upgrade your downstairs.

Comfortable Flooring

Flooding can happen anywhere when a pipe bursts, even in your Northern Colorado home. It’s important to keep this in mind when it comes to selecting flooring for your finished basement. However, our advice to homeowners is to get a solid insurance policy that will cover your basement. This will allow you to choose flooring that you like and that feels comfortable to you without stressing about a future flooding that might not even happen.

Choosing a comfortable flooring is one of the top ways to ensure that you spend as much time as you intend to in your finished basement. Carpet is one of the best options because it can fit any budget and any type of decor. If you want your basement to feel more like a living room, you can add some thick padding beneath the carpet to give it a plush feel. If you intend for this space to be a playroom for your kids, then you might want to lean towards a lower carpet in case of spills. For bath and bar areas, stick to hard tile for moisture reasons!

There is a reason we recommend hard tile! Try to not choose wood or laminate flooring for your basement. These will surely be destroyed with any moisture issues. If you like the appearance of wood, no big deal—you can find ceramic or porcelain that mimics the pattern of wood.

Painting Options

Your basement is probably pretty dark, as it’s below ground. With this in mind, it can be hard to choose a good color when there is limited light to really make it shine. Paint may appear as much as two to three shades darker on a basement wall than it would on a wall in your bedroom. With that in mind, it’s important to choose a slightly lighter shade than what you want if your basement lighting is all going to be artificial. And, if you are shying away from the idea of color in your basement, don’t be afraid! A rich color almost always looks better than just white. White tends to look a little dull without natural light.

Furnishings and Fabric

If you truly intend to spend time in your basement, you will need comfortable and functional basement furniture. We have seen many people see a lot of success with sectionals, as they can rearrange the shape as the needs of the space change and grow. Most of the time, the biggest design challenge of a basement is low ceilings, but don’t feel as if you need to only pick a few items to furnish the basement to make it seem bigger. In fact, most designers recommend that you fill the space as much as possible, leaving walkways only. It will actually make the room feel bigger. We do recommend simpler furniture, however, as anything too intricate may seem a little crowded.

If you want to make your basement look taller than it is, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves are a great addition. This works well with large, vertical artwork on the walls, hanging divider panels, and some fun way to decorate the ceiling.
